Asterism

Optical effect causing a luminous star to appear on the surface of a gem cut as a cabochon under a direct light source. The phenomenon arises from fine, oriented needle-like inclusions that reflect light in crossing bands. It is seen notably in star sapphires and star rubies. Prized for its rarity, asterism enhances the appeal of coloured stones presented by palace jewellers to discerning collectors.
