Ballet blanc

A ballet scene in which the ballerina and the female corps de ballet wear white tutus or dresses, typical of the nineteenth-century Romantic style. The ballet blanc stages supernatural beings, ghosts, sylphs, wilis or nymphs, in an ethereal atmosphere. These tableaux of great visual poetry rank among the summits of the classical ballets proposed to palace guests, their ranks of white-clad dancers creating one of dance's most haunting images.
