Berthold Kempinski

Berthold Kempinski (1843-1910), a Prussian wine merchant settled in Berlin in 1872, opened a restaurant renowned for its vast wine list and oysters. He popularised the fixed-price table d'hôte and half portions, making fine dining more accessible. His name became that of the oldest European luxury hotel chain, still operating today under the Kempinski banner.
