Bogey

A score of one stroke over par on a golf hole. For the average amateur, a bogey is a respectable outcome and the basis of so-called bogey golf. Beyond it lie the double bogey and triple bogey. The term is among the oldest in golfing vocabulary, tracing back to a nineteenth-century British music-hall song about an imaginary opponent, the Bogey Man, against whom early players measured their rounds.
