Bottle stored on its side

A bottle stored on its side is the horizontal position recommended for keeping a cork-sealed wine over time. The wine stays in constant contact with the cork, which remains moist and swollen, preserving the seal and limiting oxygen ingress. A bottle kept upright lets the cork dry and shrink, exposing the wine to premature oxidation. Wines closed with a screw cap escape this storage constraint entirely.
