Amount of white light reflected back to the eye by a gem, distinct from fire, which denotes coloured flashes. Brilliance depends on the proportions of the cut and the quality of facet polishing, which must return light toward the table rather than let it leak away. It is one of the visual criteria emphasised when a diamond is presented in a palace boutique to a prospective buyer.
