Cantilever

A cantilever is a beam or section of a building that sticks out into space, supported only at one end, no columns or walls underneath the projecting part. Frank Lloyd Wright made it famous at Fallingwater in 1939. In modern luxury hotels it's used for the wow factor: a swimming pool that appears to float over a cliff, a bedroom platform jutting out over a rainforest, a restaurant terrace hanging above the ocean. Aman Tokyo does it at altitude on the 33rd floor; Six Senses Ninh Van Bay does it over rocks in Vietnam; Singita Sweni does it over a riverbed in South Africa. When you see the building and think "how is that staying up?", that's the cantilever working.
