Corundum

Mineral species composed of aluminium oxide, of which ruby and sapphire are the two gem varieties. Its colour depends on impurities: chromium yields the red of ruby, iron and titanium the blue of sapphire. With a hardness of nine on the Mohs scale, just below diamond, corundum is highly durable. It ranks among the foremost stones in palace jewellery windows alongside diamond and emerald.
