Divertissement

A suite of dances inserted between the acts or within a narrative ballet, designed to display the virtuosity of the performers without advancing the plot. The divertissement gathers variations, ensembles and character dances into a brilliant tableau. Inherited from French Baroque ballet, it offers a spectacular interlude prized within the dance programmes proposed to palace guests, concentrating technical display into a self-contained showcase.
