Domaine

Domaine designates in France a wine estate, a broader term than chateau, mainly used in Burgundy, the Rhone Valley, Alsace and Languedoc. The word generally indicates family management or an intermediate format between small producer and large house. The most celebrated Burgundian domaines include Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Domaine Leflaive, Domaine Leroy, Domaine Roumier, Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils. The domaine mention on the label implies production limited to the property, as opposed to negociants. Emblematic Burgundian domaines are systematically present in three star wine lists (Source: INAO, 2026).
