Girdle

Widest outer edge of a cut stone, the line where the crown and pavilion meet. The girdle provides the gripping point for setting. Its width factors into the assigned cut grade: too thin and the stone becomes fragile, too thick and it adds weight without visual gain. Gemmologists examine the girdle to assess structural soundness and to judge the overall balance of the proportions.
