Grain setting

Technique in which the setter raises tiny beads of metal, called grains, directly from the body of the jewel to retain each stone. Grain setting allows many small gems to be packed closely together with little visible metal. It demands great precision under a binocular loupe. High jewellery workshops use it for dense paving and the chiselled motifs of palace pieces, where craftsmanship is paramount.
