Grand cru

Grand cru is in France the supreme category of vineyard classification, granted to plots producing the most distinguished wines of an appellation. In Burgundy, grand crus such as Romanee-Conti, Montrachet or Chambertin represent about 1 percent of regional production. In Bordeaux, the 1855 grand cru classification orders the Medoc chateaux into five levels (First to Fifth growth classified). In Champagne, the grand cru label identifies communes whose 100 percent production is valued at the highest rate. Grand crus invariably figure in three star wine lists (Source: INAO, 2026).
