Guest placement refers to the protocol rule distributing guests around the table by rank, alternation of the sexes and the separation of couples. Spouses are never seated beside each other, and the places of honour, to the right of the host and hostess, go to the most esteemed guests. Applied from the moment the seating plan is drawn up, this principle encourages lively conversation while honouring the conventions of precedence.
