Harry and Leona Helmsley

Harry Helmsley (1909-1997), a New York real estate magnate, built with his wife Leona a portfolio of luxury hotels including the Helmsley Palace on Madison Avenue. Leona, nicknamed the queen of mean for her demands on staff, embodied a theatrical brand of hotel luxury. Convicted of tax fraud in 1989, she served prison time, a famous episode in American hospitality history.
