Intermezzo

A piece inserted between the acts of a theatrical work or the movements of a composition. In the eighteenth century, the intermezzo was a comic operatic interlude placed between the acts of an opera seria, offering light contrast. These interludes could form complete works in miniature. The term also denotes a short lyrical orchestral piece, appreciated in the concerts proposed to palace guests as a tender pause within a larger programme.
