Iwan

A vaulted hall or chamber walled on three sides and entirely open on the fourth, usually facing an interior courtyard. A cornerstone of Persian and Islamic architecture, the iwan functions as a monumental threshold, a shaded reception space or a prayer hall. In heritage Eastern hospitality it organises the courtyards of riads and converted palaces, framing transitions between intimate rooms and open-air patios.
