Jamsetji Tata

Jamsetji Tata (1839-1904), founder of the Tata industrial group, opened Bombay's Taj Mahal Palace on 16 December 1903, the first Taj hotel and India's first five-star property. This pioneering building was among the first in the city lit by electricity. Its creation launched the Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), which today operates Taj hotels across the world.
