Jharokha

An overhanging window projecting from a facade, a distinctive element of the Rajput and Mughal architecture of northern India. More ornamental than the European oriel, the jharokha is dressed with colonnettes, carved canopies and pierced balustrades. It allowed occupants to watch the street unseen and to appear in public. These carved balconies characterise the Rajasthani palaces reconverted into prestige hotels, framing intimate views over courtyards and streets.
