Majlis

A formal reception room positioned near the entrance of an Arab dwelling and reserved for receiving visitors. The majlis is distinguished by its carpets, cushions arranged along the walls and geometric or floral ornament. A codified social space of Eastern hospitality, it inspires the welcome lounges of Gulf and Levantine palace hotels, where it extends an ancient tradition of receiving and honouring guests with ceremony.
