Master sommelier
Master Sommelier (MS) is the most prestigious credential in the wine service profession, awarded by the Court of Master Sommeliers (founded in London in 1977). Fewer than 300 people worldwide have passed this exam since its creation, with a pass rate under 10%. The three-part exam covers theory, blind tasting (identifying 6 wines in 25 minutes by grape, region, and vintage), and service. Why it matters for hotel guests: if a property employs a Master Sommelier, expect world-class wine recommendations and a cellar curated to exceptional standards. Don't hesitate to ask for guidance, even with a modest budget, Master Sommeliers excel at finding hidden value. Major hotels with MS staff include Eleven Madison Park, The French Laundry, and several Aman properties.
