Oak grain

Oak grain describes the density of the growth rings in the wood used for barrels. A tight grain, from slow-growing oaks such as those of Troncais, releases its aromas slowly and with finesse. A wide grain yields more tannins and compounds more quickly. The cooper selects the grain according to the desired style, as it governs the speed and subtlety of the exchange between wine and wood.
