Overture

An orchestral piece that opens an opera or ballet, played with the curtain down, and which often presents the principal themes of the work to come. The overture establishes the atmosphere and prepares the audience for the action. Some, such as those of Rossini or Mozart, have become independent concert pieces. It marks the beginning of the lyric performances proposed within the cultural programming offered to palace guests.
