Recitative

A mode of singing close to spoken declamation, free in rhythm, which serves to recount events and advance the plot of an opera. The recitative links arias and ensembles, carrying the dialogue and the action. It may be accompanied by harpsichord alone or by the full orchestra. Understanding it illuminates the dramatic flow of the operas proposed to palace guests, helping them follow the narrative between the lyrical set pieces.
