Richard D'Oyly Carte

Richard D'Oyly Carte (1844-1901), a London impresario behind the Gilbert and Sullivan operas, reinvested his theatrical profits in luxury hospitality. He opened the Savoy in London on 6 August 1889, the first British hotel with widespread electric lighting and private bathrooms. Under his direction, César Ritz and Escoffier built the establishment's gastronomic reputation.
