Richness (unctuousness)

Richness refers to a tactile impression of volume, roundness and unctuousness on the palate, often tied to glycerol content, alcohol and full ripeness. It gives the wine an almost oily texture that coats the mouth and prolongs the sense of fullness. Sought in great whites aged on lees and in opulent reds, it must stay balanced by acidity to avoid heaviness and a slack, flabby impression on the finish.
