Robert Kuok
Robert Kuok (born 1923 in Johor Bahru), a Malaysian tycoon nicknamed Asia's sugar king, opened the first Shangri-La hotel in Singapore in 1971. The brand, held by the Kuok Group, today numbers more than a hundred luxury properties across dozens of destinations. He made Shangri-La the first major luxury hotel brand born in Southeast Asia.
