Rotenburo

A rotenburo is an outdoor Japanese hot spring bath, often set against spectacular natural backdrops, mountain views, bamboo forests, snowy landscapes. The contrast between the hot mineral water (39-42°C) and cool outdoor air creates a uniquely revitalizing experience. At luxury ryokans, premium rooms often include private rotenburos attached to the suite, meaning you can bathe in total privacy at any hour. What to expect: same etiquette as indoor onsen (wash thoroughly first, enter naked, no photos in public baths). Bring a small towel for modesty when walking to and from the bath. Best times: dawn for sunrise views, evening for stars, winter for the snow-bathing contrast (a deeply atmospheric experience). Bring slippers for the path; cold air helps prevent overheating.
