Rough
The longer, less manicured grass bordering the fairways and greens of a golf course, intended to penalise inaccurate shots. The density and height of the rough alter the difficulty: thick rough can make extricating the ball very awkward. On links courses, the rough may include gorse and heather. Golf resorts calibrate their rough to balance sporting challenge against playability for the broad range of guests they welcome.
