Sarkies Brothers

The Sarkies Brothers, Armenians born in Isfahan, founded Southeast Asia's first great chain of luxury hotels. Tigran opened Penang's Eastern Hotel in 1884, then the brothers created Singapore's Raffles in 1887 and Rangoon's Strand. A 1931 bankruptcy stripped them of ownership, yet their properties survived and remain icons of colonial-era luxury hospitality.
