Silver serving tray

A silver serving tray is a flat, rimmed piece in sterling silver or silver plate on which staff carry glasses, cups, plates or correspondence to the table or the guest room. Its raised edge keeps the items from sliding and its surface may be lined with a cushioning cloth. An emblem of palace service, it is carried flat on the palm and forearm, covered with a napkin, and its regular polishing forms part of the care of the house silverware.
