Slope grooming

The smoothing and packing of piste snow carried out overnight by piste bashers, tracked vehicles that flatten the snowpack to present a regular, safe surface by morning. Grooming often leaves a ribbed pattern known as corduroy. Essential to the quality of a ski area, it governs the comfort of the descent. Resorts that host mountain palaces take particular care over the grooming of their slopes for discerning guests.
