Tincture (perfumery)

An aromatic material obtained by lengthily macerating raw ingredients, vanilla, ambergris, certain woods, in alcohol so that the solvent extracts their soluble odorous compounds. The tincture yields deep, nuanced notes, often used as fixatives or base touches that anchor a composition. A patient, artisanal process, it illustrates the savoir-faire claimed by luxury fine perfumery.
