Tokonoma

The tokonoma is the small recessed alcove you'll see on one wall of a traditional Japanese room, slightly raised, often with a hanging scroll on the back wall and a single flower arrangement or seasonal object set in front. Don't sit in it, don't put your bag in it. The seat of honor is the one facing it. In a top-tier ryokan like Tawaraya or at Aman Kyoto, the staff change what's inside daily to match the season, the weather, sometimes the guest. It's the room's quiet anchor, one beautiful thing, lit carefully, and acres of empty space around it. Once you notice tokonoma, you'll notice them everywhere in Japanese design.
