Typicity

Typicity refers to a wine's conformity with the characteristic profile expected of its appellation, grape variety and terroir of origin. Assessed by approval panels that control access to protected designations of origin, it rests on shared sensory reference points: colour, aromas, structure and balance deemed representative. A wine judged atypical, even a high quality one, may be denied the right to carry its appellation name.
