Water of a diamond

Historic expression denoting the limpidity and transparency of a diamond, likened to the clearest drop of water. A diamond said to be of the first water shows exemplary purity and absence of colour. The phrase dates back at least to the early seventeenth century and predates the modern vocabulary of the 4Cs. It survives in the prestige language of palace jewellers.
